Mike Hatch has an extensive
range of government and private sector experience in legal and regulatory
matters.
Mr. Hatch served as Attorney General of the State of Minnesota from 1999 to
2007. As Attorney General, Mr. Hatch served as the State’s chief legal
officer, representing the State of Minnesota and the public in a vast array
of legal matters. Mr. Hatch was a “working” Attorney General who
developed a national reputation for his accomplishments in numerous fields,
including health care, insurance, banking and financial services, and regulatory
enforcement. Mr. Hatch’s actions included a lawsuit against a property
and casualty insurer for not paying for cosmetic damage to thousands of homes,
a lawsuit against an insurance broker for bid-rigging, and regulatory audits
of several insurers over the manner in which they expended funds. Mr. Hatch
continues to be the highest vote-getter in Minnesota history for any constitutional
office.
Prior to his election as Attorney General, Mr. Hatch was the founding partner
in the Minneapolis law firm of Hatch, Eiden, & Pihlstrom, a boutique law
firm specializing in complex insurance, legal, health care, and regulatory
matters. Mr. Hatch represented, advised, and counseled scores of businesses
and insurance companies and agencies in the litigation, transactional, and
regulatory compliance arenas. He regularly appeared on behalf of clients in
state and federal courts in Minnesota and regularly represented clients before
state and federal regulatory agencies. Insurance companies represented by
Mr. Hatch in regulatory, transactional, and litigation matters included U.S.
Health Care, Aetna Insurance Company, Zurich Insurance Company, NAU Insurance
Company, Michigan Physicians Insurance Company, and All Nation Insurance Company.
Mr. Hatch also represented dozens of insurance agencies and businesses in
coverage disputes and other interactions with insurance companies.
From 1982 to 1990, Mr. Hatch served as Commissioner of the Minnesota Department
of Commerce. As Commissioner, Mr. Hatch was the primary regulator of the insurance,
banking, financial, securities, and real estate industries in Minnesota. Mr.
Hatch earned a reputation as a “hands on” regulator with a vast
array of knowledge about the insurance industry and other industries he regulated.
He appeared on Nightline for his investigation involving medical malpractice
insurance.
